Moving Stillness

The stillness in stillness is not the real stillness; only when there is stillness in movement does the Universal rhythm manifest” - Bruce Lee The understanding of the huge benefits of stilling the mind are universal to all spiritual practices, as well as to all martial arts – which, once you get past the kihon (techniques) ultimately are just aspects of spiritual practice any way. One reason that a still mind is so sought after is that fear, that old enemy of fluidity of movement, cannot exist in a still mind.

While this has huge practical benefit in physical encounters, there is an even bigger picture lurking in the background. The universe, and by extension, everything in it, is permeated by a universal energy that is the glue of creation; in Eastern traditions it is called Chi or Ki, the mystics called it Ain Soph, the Christians know it as Logos (The Word), to the Yogis it is Prana and, at last, science has caught up with what the ancients have always told us and called this phenomenon the Zero Point Field (The Field for short). This is the Universal Rhythm referred to by Bruce Lee, above. Although we ourselves are all a part of this vast dynamic cobweb of energy exchange, the effects, in the cluttered mind, are drowned out by our constant mental cacophony.

Once we are practiced in stillness we start to become aware of the field and when we can move, generally for brief seconds only, without losing our inner calm we start to live in time and tune with the Cosmos. We become aware of the bigger picture and our place in it. All enlightenment, no matter the belief system it operates from, is as a result of being able to access this amazing life force. This energy is so important that it led Albert Einstein to say “The Field is the sole governing principle of matter!”

Stillness just may be the gateway to Eternity.
